She is 104 years old.
She served during World War II.
And she has a message for all of us.
Today, on International Women’s Day, we are honored to share the voice of Regina “Reggie” #Bastida, a 104-year-old Basque-American World War II veteran.
At 104 years old, Regina Bastida is among the last living World War II veterans of Basque origin, and one of the few remaining voices of the generation that helped shape modern America.
Born in Boise, Idaho, in 1922 to Basque immigrant parents, Regina served during one of the most defining moments in American history. Her generation — the “Greatest Generation” — helped defend the democratic values that continue to shape our country today.
In this short video, Regina shares a message that captures the spirit of our project:
“We want to remember our young men that went to war and gave their lives for our country.”
Her words remind us why the National Basque WWII Veterans Memorial matters.
After more than a decade of research, we have identified over 2,150 Basque-American men and women who served during World War II across the United States and abroad. Their service is part of the American story — one of sacrifice, civic duty, and immigrant contribution.
Today, we have the veterans.
We have the site in Heritage Park, Gardnerville, Nevada.
We have the conceptual design.
What we need now are committed partners, donors, and institutions willing to help bring this national memorial to life and make its dedication possible before the end of 2026.
By honoring these veterans, we preserve not only a Basque story, but an important chapter of American history.
Please consider sharing Regina’s message so that the legacy of her generation continues to be remembered.
